BEER IS FOUND TO BE HEALTHIER THAN SODAS AND JUICE

A new study conducted by nutrition experts, paid for by Lipton Tea’s corporate parent, suggests that drinking alcohol, tea and coffee is better than sodas and fruit drinks. Under the guidelines, men are allowed three times the amount of beer over calorie-rich soda and fruit juice. The scientists say males can safely consume 24 ounces of beer a day, more than the recommended 16 ounces of low-fat milk and 8 ounces of juice. Beverage industry spokesmen and other nutritionists do not completely agree with the findings and warn against sanctioning a moderate consumption of alcohol. Dr. Walter Willett, chairman of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health and researcher in the study, says Lipton had no say in the scientists’ results: “This was done with complete freedom to come to whatever conclusions we came to.” They urge Americans to substitute sweet drinks with water, unsweetened tea and coffee, and other naturally unsweetened beverages.
