GRAPE-HUNGRY AMERICA

The Wine Market Council reported that Americans are drinking more wine than ever. According to the 1,398 people surveyed in 2005, most of whom made at least $35,000 a year, the number of wine drinkers has risen 31% from 2000 to 2005, while the number of adults who drink only beer and wine dropped 25%. According to the council’s president, John Gillespie, the growing trends are due to younger generations drinking more wine and people “adding wine to their range of choices.” The Millennials, adults whose ages fall between 21-28, have an early jump on the game and started drinking wine in their 20’s. Millennials who consume wine at least once a week fall at 38%, coming close to the 41% of weekly wine drinkers ages 29-59. Men make up 60% of Millennial wine consumers while women make up the majority in other age-groups.
