FRANCE, GIVE ‘EM HAIL
France’s champagne vineyards shared a fate similar to Portugal’s port vines last week. Hailstorms potentially ruined 10% of this year’s crop while ruining 2,400 hectares of vines on the 4th of July.
Although the storms do not appear to have threatened any Grand Cru vineyards, some producers in Mareuil-le-Port report vineyards with 80% damage. Growers claim they are not yet worried about the 2006 harvest, but are instead concerned that other hailstorms will come in the remaining summer months.
