THE LITTLE GREEN FAIRY ALL A’BUZZ IN MEXICO
According to U.S. officials, absinthe is making an appearance at the Mexican border. Banned in the U.S. 90 years ago due to concerns over its drug-like effect, young adults returning from Tijuana and San Ysidro are bringing back bottles, says custom officials.
Border agents are on the prowl, claiming this wasn’t a problem as early as one year ago. Although absinthe was never outlawed in Mexico, it disappeared because of bans in Europe where it was made. In the past few months, though, a Mexican-made version has reappeared in bars and liquor stores that also feature posters with the “green fairy,” absinthe’s symbol.
