BERINGER VINEYARDS RANKED TOP SELLING WINE

What are U.S. consumers drinking in restaurants? According to The Restaurant Wine’s annual ranking of the top 100 selling wine brands, California and Australian wines dominated the top five brands in restaurants nationwide. Beringer Vineyards of Foster’s Wine Estates topped the list at number one followed by Franzia, Kendall-Jackson, Yellow Tail and Inglenook.

The report found that case sales in the on-premise segment grew 6%, or 4 million cases, to reach 64 million cases sold. On-premise sales now exceed $12 million, accounting for 22% of case volume and nearly 50% of dollar value. E&J Gallo and Constellation particularly dominated the on-premise channel with Gallo having 14 of the top 100 brands, representing 6% of the total market, and Constellation placing 21 brands, accounting for 10% of the total market.

Consolidation is playing a big factor in wine sales on-premise as companies continue to buy one another out. The survey found that 15 companies control 77 of the top 100 brands and 86% of all on-premise sales.

Chardonnay was the most dominate wine category, accounting for 34% of sales and 21 of the 60 different wines ranked in the list. Altogether, white wines outsold red wines by a more than 2-to-1 margin (55% to 23% of total sales), although red wines are increasingly growing in popularity. Consumer taste trends are always changing, and expect an emergence of more unusual varietals, such as Riesling.
