FROM WINE SHOPS TO BIG BOX: DO LARGE RETAILERS CHEAPEN WINE?
Big-box retailers are making headway in the wine aisle with Costco leading the pack. In effort, perhaps, to appeal to its wide range of consumers, the retail giant is planning to use Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s Buying Guide to help merchandise its wine and spirits sales, the company announced today.
The emergence of big box retailers looking to increase their wine departments might actually help small wine shops as consumers’ backlash against the always familiar Gallos and Kendall Jacksons in favor of more inconspicuous brands. But Costco-type retailers are getting wine out there, making it more familiar to consumers who would normally opt for beer or nothing at all. You could, in fact, argue that the big boys are providing free marketing for the little guys. Also, try as they may, the Costcos and Wal-Marts of the world just don’t have the homey, familiar feel found at your local liquor store.
