MASSACHUSETTS LEFT WITH JUST TWO MAJOR LIQUOR WHOLESALERS. Martignetti and United Liquors Ltd. are joining forces to create Massachusetts’ largest liquor wholesaler that will have operations in all the New England states expect for Connecticut.
Earlier this week Martignetti announced it had reached a preliminary agreement to buy rival United but the final agreement has yet to be made. The new merger leaves Massachusetts with only one other major liquor wholesaler, Horizon Beverage Co.
"This is consistent with the consolidation in the industry, and other major markets are down to two or three major players," said Pam McDermott, a spokesperson for the two companies. Couldn’t have said it better myself.
Southern Wine & Spirits owns 25% of United Liquors after the two companies announced a partnership in February 2005.
HAGGLING FOR BEER/WINE IN GROCERY STORES. Massachusetts residents will vote for or against supermarkets to sell beer and wine like neighboring states New Hampshire, New York and Connecticut on a Nov. 7 ballot. If the measure if passed, it would be great timing for the merger between Martignetti and United.
