WINE SALES UP 11% FOR JULY

July showed considerable growth for table wine whose sales rose 11% as compared to a 10.2% increase in June and 9.4% YTD. Volume jump 4.8% versus June’s growth of 3.3%.

Slightly down from June, the table wine category saw a 5.9% price/mix gain to $5.28 per bottle. Wines priced $6 and under still post the highest volume though more expensive wines ($15 and up) are the fastest growing segment.

Christine Farkas of Merrill Lynch wrote: “Data confirmed that low-end brands are taking rate and benefiting from a trade up from jug to bottles; mid-tier brand pricing is about flat and super-premium pricing is up modestly generally from positive mix.”

In July, volumes for those wines priced over $15 per bottle was the highest, rising by 23.5%, along with a 21% increase in the $12-$14.99 segment and a 13.1% gain in the $9-$11.99 segment. Volumes for the $5.50-$8.99 segment rose by 10.8%; while volumes in the $3.00-$5.49 and <$2.99 segments increased by 2.0% and (3.7%) respectively.

DOMESTIC BIG BOYS TRAILING CATEGORY GROWTH. Leading vintners – Gallo, Constellation and the Wine Group (together accounting for close to 58% and 39% of supermarket volumes and sales) saw volumes grow 5.2%, 3.4% and 3.8% in July, trailing the category’s growth of 4.8%. YTD volumes for Gallo, Constellation and the Wine Group rose by 1.6%, 5.7% and 7.5% respectively. Throwing Vincor in the mix pushes Constellation’s YTD volumes down to 5.4%.

Constellation’s fine wine portfolio grew 22.9% in line with the industry’s fine wine growth, while Woodbridge’s volume dropped 1.4% and is flat YTD.

IMPORTS GAIN SHARE. Imported wine volume increased 8.1% outpacing domestic brand growth of 4% in July, helped by double-digit volume gains from Argentina, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Spain and Portugal and triple digit gains from South Africa. Australia was flat with wine prices slipping -1.3% in supermarkets in July, and 1% YTD.

California-based wine shipments rose by just 3.9% while Washington and Oregon wines enjoyed volume gains of 9.3%.
