U.S. WINE CONSUMPTION AT AN ALL TIME HIGH

U.S. wine consumption grew 2.1% in 2005 to 273.7 million 9-liter cases – the “latest increase in more than a decade of steady growth and a new all-time high on a case basis,” according to the 2006 edition of Adams Wine Handbook published by Adams
Beverage Group. At the same time, per capita consumption has increased to 2.19 gallons per American, the highest level since 1988.

Within the wine categories table and sparkling wines posted volume gains while wine coolers, dessert & fortified wines and vermouth/aperitifs all lost volume last year. Imported wines overall grew 5.6% while domestic wines rose 0.9%.

The top five imported brands were up 11.3% last year, led by Australia's Yellow Tail, which gained 15.4%, or a million cases. Imports from Italy, Chile, Spain, Argentina and elsewhere all grew substantially but French imports dragged behind with a small 2.4% increase.
