WINE AND SPIRITS SUMMER SALES
Newly released IRI data shows that the non-sparkling wine category jumped 11.1% in supermarket sales from a year ago for the 2006 summer selling season (20 weeks ending Oct. 1). During the same period, sparkling wine was up an impressive 13.6%, making both trends the highest in summer sales for the category over the past five years.
While lagging a bit behind wine, the spirits category finished the 2006 summer with a 9.5% increase in supermarket sales – also representing the highest summer sales increase for the category in over five years.
Wine and spirits struggled overall in drugstores during the 2006 summer. Still Wine was up 1.1% in sales vs. a year ago, while sparkling wine finished down 0.6% and spirits decreased 2.4% in drugstores.
