BIG SPENDERS IN THE U.K.

According to a study released by Vinexpo (the world’s largest wine and spirits fair), the U.K. wine market will be the most lavish wine-drinking nation within the next three years.

By 2010 retail sales will reach nearly 5.5 billion pounds at which point the British will be spending more on wine than the French, Germans or Italians, making the U.K. the biggest retail wine market in Europe. According to the study, the growth comes mainly from increased consumption, combined with higher-than-average wine bottle prices in the U.K.

[Ed. Note: Clearly the cheap Australian imports have been outweighed by more expensive brands, although Australia has replaced France as the top supplier to the U.K].

Annual average wine consumption is forecast to grow at 3.7% in the ten years from 2001 to 2010 - three and a half times faster than the growth in world consumption. But even with the consumption growth, British wine drinkers will still drink less than the world’s top four – France, Italy, the U.S. and Germany.

Red wine accounted for just over half of all wine drunk in 2005 (nearly 53%) with consumption increasing by more than 35% between 2001 and 2005. Rosé wine, however, showed very rapid growth of more than 63% in the same period, and consumption of rosé is forecast to rise by 25% by 2010.

SCOTCH WHISKEY REIGNS SUPREME. As far as spirits are concerned, Scotch Whisky is still the U.K.'s biggest selling spirit, though each year sales are declining. Between 2001 and 2005 sales fell by 6.7% and are slated to fall a further 10% by 2010. Nonetheless, the U.K. remains the fourth largest market in the world for whisky sales by volume.

Vodka, meanwhile is rapidly gaining on Scotch and will overtake it by 2010. Volume sales are rising at an average of more than 5.5% annually and by 2010 are forecast to reach 8.405 million cases.

Other interesting tidbits from Vinexpo:

- The U.S. will become the world's biggest wine consumer by 2010, overtaking Italy and France

- The U.S. is the world's biggest market for wine sales at $19.7 billion dollars in 2005. Sales are forecast to reach $22.75 billion by 2010

- Sales of gin are falling while rum, scotch and tequila are growing (although WSD feels that gin sales will eventually improve).

- The U.S. is the world's largest cognac market followed by China and the U.K.
