NORWEGIAN GROUP AFTER V&S
Just-Drinks reported today that Norwegian wine and spirits group Arcus is considering making a takeover bid for Sweden’s V&S Group.
Ratos, the Sweden-based private equity group that owns Arcus, said the company could make an offer for V&S, excluding its flagship vodka brand Absolut. According to senior investment manager Leif Johanson, Ratos interest lies only in the V&S operations, not Absolut.
Ratos bought Arcus, whose stable of brands includes Linie aquavit, Braastad Cognac and Vikingfjord vodka, in 2005.
V&S TO FIGHT FOR CALIFORNIA TRADEMARK. V&S plans to fight for ownership of the Golden Gate trademark by appealing a decision from a Swedish court. The court ruled that V&S has infringed the trademark rights for California wine brand Golden Gate (owned by The Wine Group), the best selling white wine in Sweden.
V&S claims they secured permission from the Golden Gate vintners in 1998 to use the Golden Gate brand name, and that everything changed once The Wine Group bought the brand.
