THE WHO’S WHO OF WINE AND SPIRITS

Adam’s Beverage Group has announced the winners of the 2007 Growth Brand Awards for last year's top selling wine and spirits brands in the U.S.

"These awards recognize not just sales and marketing achievement," said Adams vice president and group publisher Charles Forman, "but in addition pay homage to the important role responsible beverage consumption plays in the social lives of millions of Americans."

And the winners of the spirits category are (drum roll please):

Diageo took top honors with seven awards (lead by Captain Morgan Rum and Johnnie Walker Black Label Scotch)
Pernod-Ricard USA received four (headed up by Stolichnaya Vodka)
Bacardi took four (lead by Bacardi Rum's dominance and Grey Goose Vodka's continued explosive growth).
Barton Brands, Beam Global, Brown-Forman, Heaven Hill Distilleries, Moet Hennessy USA and Sidney Frank Importing each saw their spirit brands take home three honors.

Impressive brand performance sent honors to Jagermeister, Skyy Vodka, Patron Tequila, Ketel One Vodka and Svedka Vodka as well.

Winners in the wine category include:

Yellow Tail prevailed as the dominant brand among imported wines
Beringer was the largest volume award winner.
Constellation split 13 awards between its Centerra Wine and Pacific Wine Partners divisions, and Robert Mondavi Private Selection.
E&J Gallo picked up eight awards, led by the fast moving Barefoot Cellars.
Bronco Wine Co., Brown-Forman and Foster's Americas each picked up five awards

Other high performance brands include Foxhorn, Cavit, Riunite, Lindemans and Clos du Bois.

Vodka reigned supreme in the distilled spirit category where eight of the thirteen spirit brands receiving Fast Track awards (sales exceeded 100,000 9-liter cases in 2006 and double-digit growth over the past four years) are vodkas. Other Fast Track awards went to two tequilas, and one rum, one cordial and one Irish whiskey.

In the Established Growth Brands category, of the 27 brands cited, six were vodkas, four tequilas, and three each rums, American whiskies, Cognac/brandy or cordials. Established Brands are those operating from huge sales bases, with more modest percentage gains, although total volume can be very high.

Overall, according to Adams researchers, spirits were up in 2006 in volume by 3.7%, while wine overall grew 3.4%, a continuation of a multi-year growth spurt.
