FLORIDA TO VOTE ON DIRECT WINE SHIPMENTS
Direct wine shipments to Florida may soon be a thing of the past according to a press release issued today by Free the Grapes. As it turns out, the state has until May 4 when the 2007 legislative session ends to decide whether it will continue allowing direct-to-consumer shipments from in-state and out-of-state wineries. The following information can be found on the DBPR’s (Department of Business & Professional Regulation) website:
“The Florida Legislature is considering legislation on the wine shipment issue this legislative session and is expected to pass legislation that directly impacts wine shipment into Florida.”
“This website will remain as a resource until the last day of Session, May 4, 2007.”
Free the Grapes called these statements “ominous” as they imply “that Florida consumers will be cut off from buying directly from their favorite wineries on May 5.
In the next four weeks the Florida legislature will have to decide between SB 126, SB 2282 (which both include a 250,000 gallon cap), and the wine industry’s model direct shipping bill, HB1217.
