PREMIUM AUSSIE WINES GAIN TRACTION

Australian wine exports rose in value by 7% in 2006-07 and were poised to pass $3 billion for the first time, the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation says. The 7% increase is up significantly from just 2% growth in the 2005-2006 period.

The latest report shows that bulk shipment growth has slowed, thankfully, with an increase in the more expensive bottle exports. Bulk wine growth dropped from 52% in 2005-2006 to 20% in the current period. Why is that? Well, for one, the grape glut is starting to recede, and two, red wine is apparently driving growth in bottled products.

The US and UK remain the two key markets for Australia, but China also performed strongly.

Australian wine is also gaining more popularity at higher price points. The report shows that consumers are trading up to premium and super-premium brands with shipments increasing 16% and 15%, respectively.
