JULY SPIRITS DECLINE -2.6%, DOWN FROM JUNE

In the four weeks ending July 15, total spirits sales grew 0.8% as compared to the same period last year, according to IRI total food and drug scan data. Category volume decreased -2.6% during the same period. Both value and volume numbers were down from the four week period ending June 17. To take a look at those numbers, click here.

Vodka continued to outperform other categories in July, with sales up 3.6% and volume increasing 0.7%. Domestic vodka sales were up 1%, while imported vodka sales grew 9%. When it comes to pricing, sales of super-premium vodka in the $21-$26 range rose an impressive 62%, although down from June’s increase of 85%. The second most successful price category is ultra-premium ($26 and above), which increased 9%.

Rum sales grew 2.4% and volume jumped 0.7%. It’s true what they say, ultra-premium rum is on the rise. The $25 and above category grew 7.4% by value, but decreased 3% by volume. Premium rum sales ($10-$16) grew 4%, while volume rose 2.2%.

Sales of tequila worsened in July, rising 1.6% as compared to June’s 3% growth, while volume was down -4.5% in July and -2.4% in June. Ultra-premium and super-premium tequilas are on the rise. The $30 and above category grew 27.7% by value and 27% by volume, while the $20-$30 category increased 27.5% by sales and 45% in volume. Premium tequila was in a big decline, with value down -9% and volume down -12.5%.

Whiskey sales and volume declined -0.2% and -3.4%, respectively. Meanwhile, sales of Irish whiskey grew a whopping 22%, with North American whiskey down -0.1% and Scotch declining 1.1%. The only two price segments that showed any value growth was ultra-premium whiskey ($22 and above), up 5%, and super-premium whiskey ($16 to $22), up 1.2%. Popular whiskey ($8 to $12) sales declined 0.5%.

The top 5 brands ranked by dollar sales experienced the following value change in July: Smirnoff (4.4%), Bacardi (-0.6%), Captain Morgan (4%), Jose Cuervo (-6%) and Jack Daniels (-0.1%).
