EUROPEAN IMPORTS MAY SOON TAKE A BIG PRICE INCREASE
It’s no secret that the waning U.S. dollar is making it more difficult for European imports to compete, but Eric Asimov, chief wine critic for The Times, argues it’s only going to get worse.
“In three to five months,” says Eric, “many in the wine trade say, the pressure will become irresistible, and prices for European Union wines will rise.”
Importers and distributors of European wines say they have helped keep wine prices level for months to help prevent “fickle” wine consumers from switching to less expensive brands.
As you would expect, the currency exchange poses a great opportunity for California wineries, although they are dealing with a rise in labor and transportation costs.
