TTB HELPS ABSINTHE’S BAD RAP

An interesting article in SF Gate takes a look at the torrid history of absinthe, which some refer to as “baseless hysteria,” and its new start in the U.S.

“Earlier this year, a lone Washington, D.C., lawyer took on the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau in an attempt to lift the ban. After some legal wrangling, the agency agreed - with some limits,” writes Stacy Finz, Chronicle staff writer.

Last week, St. George Spirits of Alameda, CA received the news that the TTB finally approved its label after seven applications. St. George is now the first American company to sell absinthe in the U.S. since 1912, according to the article. With only 3,600 bottles of its Absinthe Verte, the company will only offer it at its tasting room and at limited liquor stores for $74 for a 750 ml bottle.

The TTB ruled that the drinks contain no more than 10 parts per million of the chemical thujone and that the word absinthe appear in small print on the bottle's label.
