SPIRITS GROWTH SWAPS WITH BEER
An article by the Associated Press claims the rate of spirits growth is slowing as beer sales continue to pick up. Estimates show that spirits shipments grew between 2% and 2.5% during the year, compared to growth of 4% a year ago. Beer also outperformed spirits in September, October and November, according to Nielsen data.
“After years of losing people to mixed drinks, industry experts say the beer industry regained some of its lost luster in 2007, helped by surging interest in craft beers, a slowing economy and the desire of more drinkers to imbibe at home,” says the article.
The surge in beer growth is mainly credited to a heightened interest in craft beers. But of course not everyone agrees that spirits growth is declining. John McDonnell, chief operating officer at Patron Spirits Co., says growth will continue in 2008 as the cocktail culture gets even stronger.
