Wine & Spirits News Round-up
A new study has found that men who drink a moderate amount of red wine may lower their risk of lung cancer, even if they’re smokers, reports U.S.News.com.
“An antioxidant component in red wine may help to prevent lung cancer," said lead researcher Chun Chao, a research scientist with the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of Research and Evaluation. "The findings provide an impetus for future research to find out if there is something in red wine that may help to either prevent or treat lung cancer."
For the study, Chao's group collected data on 84,170 men who participated in the California Men's Health Study. Among these men, the researchers identified 210 cases of lung cancer.
The researchers found that there was, on average, a 2% lower risk of lung cancer associated with each glass of red wine consumed per month.
The reduction wasn't as pronounced among nonsmokers who drank one to two glasses of red wine a day. And no reduction in risk for lung cancer was associated with white wine, beer or liquor, the researchers said. The findings were published in the October issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.
SAZERAC AND FIREFLY DISTILLERY FORM J-V
Firefly Distillery and The Sazerac Company have formed a joint venture to sell and market Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka globally. Effective September 15, the j-v provides Firefly with access to the Sazerac global distribution network. Scott Newitt, partner for Firefly said the company is “extremely pleased with the success of Firefly Sweet Tea.” Mark Brown, ceo of Sazerac, said: “We believe that Firefly...is a great product.”
The vodka is distilled and bottled in South Carolina and currently available in South Carolina and 10 additional states, including Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Louisiana and Tennessee.
DIDDY AND CIROC FORM “RAT PACK” COMMERCIAL
Sean “Diddy” Combs (or P. Diddy or Puff Daddy) and Ciroc Vodka are launching a new ad campaign based on Frank Sinatra and the days of the rat pack. With Sinatra’s “Come Fly With Me” playing in the background, Combs will provide a “modern interpretation” of the infamous rat pack celebrating with Ciroc.
The spot was shot in black and white at one of Sinatra's former California homes. The 15- and 30-second commercials depict Combs as the host of a private house party, serving Ciroc to the “chic crowd” and embodying “of the brand's commitment to defining ‘sophisticated celebration.’"
Ciroc is made using French Mauzac Blanc and Ugni Blanc grapes, which are distilled five times, providing a crisp, clean taste and citrus nose. This ultra-premium vodka launched nationwide in September 2003.
GLENLIVET FAMILY LAUNCHES SIX PRINT ADS
Pernod’s Glenlivet is promoting its family of brands with six print ads running this month in Esquire, GQ, Golf Magazine and Playboy. Copy reads: “In 1824, we started something that connoisseurs since have delighted in finishing.” In an article, Brandweek noted the campaign marks a new advertising turn for Pernod Ricard, which has traditionally marketed its brands individually.
Arthur Shapiro, an alcohol industry consultant with AM Shapiro and Associates in New York, told Brandweek that the strategy “provides a halo, a top-of-the-line icon even though there may be less expensive and affordable variations at retail.”
Glenlivet spent $5.2 million on U.S. advertising in 2007 and $1.3 million through July of this year, excluding online, per Nielsen Monitor-Plus.
RUTH’S CHRIS REPLACES FORMER PRESIDENT
Ruth’s Hospitality Group said yesterday that ceo and president Michael O’Donnell has assumed responsibility for its Ruth’s Chris Stake House brand following the resignation of chain president Geoffrey Stiles, reports NRN. The company said Geoffrey resigned from his position, including coo and executive vp of the corporation, to “purse other opportunities.” O’Donnell is a veteran of foodservice companies such as Champps Entertainment and was named to his new position at Ruth’s in early August. He filled the vacancy left by the April ouster of Craig Miller, who also served as chairman. Like other restaurants, Ruth’s Chris has been struggling to strengthen sales amid the casual dining downturn and general economic problems.
In other news, the restaurant industry’s third quarter isn’t looking any brighter. The NRN Stock Index, which tracks all 63 public restaurant companies, fell -4.94% Monday, reports NRN. The drop marks a larger decline than the broader market indexes and one of the largest one-day losses in years. Analysts blame a combination of weaker consumer traffic, hurricanes and a slowdown in business spending. Trends are expected to improve by the fourth quarter.
BEAM GLOBAL LOOKS TO EXPAND IN INDIA
Like other beer, wine and spirits companies, Beam Global is looking to expand in India their imported brands and Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) brands in the country. According to local reports, Beam is looking to establish brands like DYC and Bourbon in the domestic market, in addition to its already successful Teachers brand.
The ceo of Beam Global’s India unit, Harish Moolchandani, said: “We have around a dozen brands in India but around 70 per cent revenue comes from single brand 'Teachers'. But we are now focusing more on establishing our other brands such as DYC and Bourbon in the domestic market.''
The company plans to invest more money in establishing its other brands, especially its India-made brand DYC. According to Harish, the company expects to grow around 20-25% in the near future.
