Pernod Ricard USA's New Brand Ventures division has acquired a majority stake in Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal brand.
Del Maguey was founded in 1995 by US-based artist Ron Cooper, who was one of the early pioneered the category in the US. The brand is perhaps the most visible category representative and represented as many as 25,000 cases in the US as of 2015, per the New Yorker. The brand's family of mezcals has since expanded to nine artisan mezcal offerings.
Under the terms of the deal, Del Maguey's management team including Ron Cooper, Michael Gardner, Steve Olson etc., will remain in place and operations in Mexico will "remain intact," per a release.
Ron says the Pernod partnership will allow Del Maguey's management team "will gain increased opportunities to distribute our products to mezcal lovers around the world while also ensuring that the palenqueros - or families we work with - are able to continue crafting their liquid art for generations to come."

Del Maguey will join Monkey 47, Smooth Ambler and Plymouth gin in Pernod's New Brand Ventures division. The transaction is expected to close within 90 days.
