Supplier Association Execs Agree (to Disagree)

Industry members of all beverage alcohol industries spent last week enjoying the sunshine and the freedom to wear shorts at NABCA's annual conference in Arizona. It's not often that all three industries come together, so supplier association executives Joe McClain (president of the Beer Institute), Peter Cressy (ceo of the Distilled Spirits Council) and Bobby Koch (ceo of the Wine Institute) took the opportunity to discuss some of the issues facing all of them.

Beer has commanded the largest share of the alcoholic beverage category for decades. But as consumers demand more variety, wine and spirits have the wind at their back. Interestingly, US beer consumption peaked in 2008, while wine and spirits trends have been consistently growing for more than 20 years, David Decker, president of Consumer Edge Insights, told NABCA attendees last week.

What's Next for Missouri?

The contentious and heavily-lobbied Missouri franchise bill (SB 114) did not make it to a vote on Friday before the state Senate session came to a close. You'll recall the legislation would have provided a more narrow definition of "franchise" as it applies to alcohol, making it harder for suppliers to remove their brands from their current distribution houses.

Interesting Changes Afoot in the Vodka Category

Talk of vodka price wars earlier this week (see WSD 05-13-2013 ) got us thinking about the vodka category as a whole. It's impressive to think that as the largest spirits category, it continues to post growth. Vodka currently commands 34% share of the spirits market in control states, and still managed to grow volumes by 4.5% and dollar sales by 6%, per 12-month NABCA data. To put things into perspective, Irish whiskey remains the fastest growing overall spirits category at 18% in terms of volume, but only makes up 0.8% share of the total market.
